Roy Dupuis

This is my ‘first love’ so far as celebrities go.
On Twitter 3 March 2015 I had some crushes earlier than finding Roy, but some of his work quite literally saved my life. At a time when I didn’t care whether I lived or died, (leaning more toward the latter) one of his characters gave me a way to keep going, to keep getting up and going on day after day till it got a little easier and I cared about living again.

His stuff is a bit hard to come by since, after his one smash U.S. success he chose to go back and work in his beloved Montreal. Aside from being a phenomenal actor – one who truly becomes each character so you don’t ‘see’ Roy anymore but the character being portrayed – he is a great guy. Huge charisma, environmentalist with a focus on saving natural rivers, avid sportsman and just a very sweet and giving man. He is also extremely private. He isn’t involved in social media, though he has occasionally done live chats with fan club.

Some of his work is just mind-blowing (though it can be a bit depressing) and when you talk to him, it’s like you are the only other person in the room at that moment. His focus is intense yet kind and he makes you feel very comfortable immediately even though you knew absolutely you’d never be able to speak a word in his presence. Yes…personal experience.

His one really good fan page changed hands and isn’t as accessible as it used to be – so I’m just going to put up a few pictures here. Now, I’ve gathered pictures for years and have no clue where most of them came from on the internet. I’m not meaning any copyright infringement or anything so if someone can tell me where they are from so I can give credit that would be awesome. If someone has legitimate reason for me to remove – I can do that too.

A couple of younger shots. No clue on the timeframe….in his 20’s I’d think

His breakout role was a show called Les filles de Caleb in 1990 – a television series done in Quebec
Emilie4 His character was Ovila Pronovost

Another series was called Scoop, done in Quebec from 1992 – 1995. His character here was named Michel Gagné. This one was dubbed into English and quite interesting.

A Sci-Fi flick done in 1995 with Peter Weller called Screamers

Next up is what most American audiences know him from.

One of my favorite of his characters is  Ross Desbiens from The Last Chapter.  Fabulous show with another of my favs Michael Ironside. This show is about an outlaw biker group, The Triple Sixers. Characterized as one of the largest outlaw biker gangs in the world, The Triple Sixers dominate Canada.

In 2005 it was ‘The United States of Albert’ another comedy and “The Rocket: The Legend of Rocket Richard” playing the title character and real person of Maurice Richard.

Emotional Arithmetic and Shake Hands with the Devil both came out in 2007 and were seen by more English speakers than most of Roy’s films. Both are pretty heavy and deep, but well-acted. In Shake Hands, Roy plays Romeo Dallaire, the head of the UN Peacekeepers in Rwanda at the time of the genocide. The general himself has said when watching the movie he was so caught up in Roy’s performance he thought he was watching himself.

In 2009, he played a really nasty guy named Scully in a movie called The Timekeeper

This is not an exhaustive list of Roy’s roles….not even close….but a nice representation of his range. One of his most gripping roles is from a movie called ‘Being at Home with Claude’. I sat pinned to my seat through that one, never moving till it was over at which point I drained the full glass of wine that had been sitting there the whole time.

TY Beth, saw almost all except ” Being at Home with Claude”. Everyone who knew General Dallaire( Quebec) said the same thing, he embodied his persona, his everything. General Dallaire was suffering from PTSD and suicidal and Roy felt every emotion and horror. I’m Roy glad he was there for you, it would have been a tragedy otherwise. I also had someone who saved me from my void dark place and i continually thank him.
I have not met another Roy fan outside Quebec and you make my day.

We actually have a few hiding in the Outlander fandom which I think is cool. You know there is an official fandom for him on YUKU right? He did a live chat with us once. Getting to meet him and tell him thank you and that he through creating Michael not only saved me but gave me the courage to start writing, a dream I had had for years. I finished the book finally – now I just have to convince WB to let me publish it since it’s based directly on LFN

      • jabonader says:

Oh my with your writing about LFN i would in line to get your autograph.
I taped and watch that series often, still do. I’ll check YUKU thank you. He also works with a conservation water group in Quebec.

You *met* Roy? Ok, I’m just a little bit jealous. I’ve seen most of the movie’s you’ve mentioned he was in (as well as several others), but there are a couple I’ve missed out on.

Met, have had his arm around me and looked deep into those intense eyes to tell him ‘thank you’ for saving my life. Yeah. He has some truly great work out there and so many I didn’t mention.
