Micro Fiction

I entered a writing contest for the first time ever a couple of weeks ago – for a 100 word story. I know a lot of people are really into this micro-fiction so thought I’d take a crack at it. I just wrote what came to me in the moment – and it came out a little dark.

The challenge was to base the story on this quote:

My story wasn’t chosen. I thought I’d share what I wrote here.

She had dressed so carefully. Meager savings spent on the sheer gown, special hair styling, her first ever manicure. She sat on the bench to wait, glowing at the memories of her heart’s desire finally asking her out. Floating on that warm, fuzzy feeling for days – she had missed the sneers. The pain when she had been laughingly told it was a joke – she would never be chosen. Doubling over from the pain of churning gut and broken heart. Her new date would make it right.

She was found frozen and shredded after the storm.  Death had claimed his date.
